Feature Member - ALEX

This weeks feature child is Alex. Alex is an adorable 10 year old boy. He has Downs syndrome and has major communication problems due to developmental delay and Central Auditory Processing Delay.

His family are fundraising for an iPad to give him a better way to communicate. So if you have a few spare $$ sitting at the bottom of a drawer please donate or share this post. Think how hard it is when a child cannot say "I love you" or simply say mum or dad. :(

Ended: WIN!! 1 of 10 Flashcard for iPad apps by INKids

WIN!! 1 of 10 Codes for INKids Flashcard for iPad

We are happy to announce that INKids have kindly given us 10 codes for this app (worth $4.49AUD) to give away to our iHelpers!

It is a very well designed, colourful, interactive Flashcard app which was made with the assistance of the NSW Government.  There are hundreds of flashcards which are placed into their different categories ie: numbers, transport, animals, shapes.

The cartoon animations are recognisable and well designed.  My favourite feature is that there are multi languages - so your child can learn a 2nd language easily.  Teaching a new language at a young age is the best time for children because it is so easy for them to pick it up.  For example: how many of your kids can speak a few words and count to ten in Spanish after watching Dora?

As a bonus, there are also two games, WORD MATCH and SPELLING GAME so they can practise the words they are learning from the Flachcards!

Purchase via iTunes HERE if you want it straight away!

Check out their other great apps here: www.inkids.com.au

The selfless act of Zoe (7yrs old)

I was a bit nervous filming this video this morning - thinking to myself  "I know how much you LOVE getting Canteen, but please make the right choice honey"

It could have backfired...... and then it would never have been published

But it didn't backfire - and I am so proud of my beautiful 7yr old daughter Zoe for making the correct decision.

Zoe has an Autism Spectrum Disorder which, to those in the know, is evident in this video due to her gazing at EVERYTHING apart from me when I am speaking to her.

LOVE YOU TO BITS ZOE!! YOU MADE ME SO PROUD TODAY :)

********************************************************************
As a direct result of seeing this video on my wall, a Facebook friend of mine David Ready wrote:  Being the dad of two daughters myself, now both wonderful adults, I am just so impressed with your gorgeous, beautiful, (both inner and outer), little daughter. What a kid! I am so proud of her as well, and I will match her $10. What a beautiful way to start the week. Thanks for sharing.

Leave a message here for Zoe if you are also willing to match her donation.  You'd make her day at the same time as supporting a boy with Cerebral Palsy who needs an iPad, a wheelchair mount and an AAC (communication app).

ZANY- SOLD OUT!!

or
DIY - DESIGN YOUR OWN PLAIN CALICO - SOLD OUT!!

These Cloth for Comfort Weighted Lap Bags are used in many home,
clinical, school and work environments for those living with (but not
limited to) Sensory Processing Disorders, Autism, ADHD, ADD, Anxiety and
Restless Leg Syndrome.

Deep pressure can stimulate the release of serotonin in the brain, in turn helping children and adults to be calm, relaxed, focus on a task and self regulate their sensory input. In a practical sense, Weighted Lap Bags can be placed on the child/adults lap at times like; at a restaurant sitting at the table, during seated
classroom activities, doing their homework on a computer, travelling on public transport/car as well as in the workplace or home computer for adults.

They are filled with non-toxic plastic pellets (the same that are used in some teddy bears and soft toys). The shape of these Weighted Lap Bags makes them 'mould' to the shape of a child in the seated position, with the pellets divided evenly between 2 rows of 5 sections each to ensure balanced weight distribution, with the centre sections sitting inbetween their legs to make a more 'snug' or 'moulded' fitting over their legs, to make the fitting more secure over their legs.

The weighted lap bags are 1.5kg and are approx 45cm x 28cm. These Cloth
for Comfort Weighted Lap Bags are fully machine washable and they are
covered by a single layer of material, and sewn using a heavyweight
cotton thread.

These Cloth for Comfort weighted Lap Bags (valued at $42each), are discontinued stock as the new design now has a double layer of material enclosing the pellets. As they are now discontinued I needed to find them another home and thought iHelp SN Kids could use these to raise some further funds for the incredibly deserving children they support!

NB: Funds will go to Cloth For Comfort's PayPal account and they will then deposit the $20 with the donors name showing into Joseph's Fundraising page (to allow them to track inventory).
